Live Trip Report: June 8th 2017: Las Vegas Trip
Live Trip Report #2 in Vegas.
Casino: Venetian, Las Vegas
Date: June 8th 2017
Stakes: 2/5NL $1000 max
My sleep schedule is pretty messed up after the first long day grinding and I only had a few hours of sleep. I did my stable work in the morning and then went for a jog/ate some Hawaiian BBQ (basically Asian fusion, very Korean and Japanese inspired meats, go try it if you haven’t) and then took a nap.
I started at the 2/5NL 1k max at the Venetian around 8:00 pm. There were a lot of games running and my table looked relatively decent. There were 2 grinders and the rest were older guys who looked like tourists. The game was much slower than I expected and I won a few pots by opening/c-betting/taking it down.
I am starting to wonder if I should start using the smaller/goofier sizings that live regulars use when doing slightly thinner value bets in live games.
I opened KQ and get 4 callers. The flop is Q92 and I c-bet 1/2 pot, I get called by one player. He was an older calling station who was fairly passive for the most part. The turn was the 7 and I checked, he checked behind. The river was the 3 and I valuebet $75 into a $190 pot and he calls AQ quickly.
The other hands are fairly boring. I watch the player next to me stack off with A8 on a T72 board for 200bbs in a 3-bet pot and loses vs. QQ. The game starts to pick up a little bit and I’m card dead.
2 hours later, FINALLY: I flop my FIRST set of this trip.
I call a PFR (new Asian guy who just sat down) on the button with 88 and 3 others call as well. We’re like 5 to the flop.
The flop is T68
SB donk bets $30 (same guy who lost with A8. He’s gambly and will put a lot of money in with bad hands), PFR flat calls. I raise to $140, SB folds, PFR calls. The turn is the Q and PFR checks, I bet $220, he jams (we’re like $900ish deep) and I call. The river is the 5 and he flips over KQ and I lose.
I pull the walk of shame to the ATM and am tilted at this point. I think it’s the aesthetic part of live poker that is much more tilting than online poker, where you’re looking at digital chips and digital screen names. Seeing this guy stack my chips after losing the 80/20 tilted me and I got up to get more $ from the ATM. After steaming for a few minutes, I decided I’d rather go and eat some food and go meet up with a former horse of ours. We ate Giordanos, a Chicago pizza chain on the strip. Good stuff and I ate my sorrows away. (We had the BBQ chicken pizza, it was quite good)-
I called it a night after that.
Overall, I’m happy with how I played but I’m pretty disappointed in my results so far this trip. Obviously a very short sample size and a very cold deck- I haven’t gotten Aces once, had KK once, and I’ve flopped one set. I’ve also had a minimal amount of flushes and no straights to think of. It’s times like these where I’m pretty glad that I do not play live poker full time, as it definitely tests your overall patience and mental game ability when you are sitting for hours without a hand.
I plan to do some stable stuff today and then maybe play tonight. I have a scheduled dinner with some guys from our stable and if anyone is in Vegas and wants to meet up, shoot me a PM. I’ll probably play tonight and then just do touristy stuff tomorrow and hang out on the strip/no poker. I’m hoping to find a friend who’s staying on the strip so I can get in on a pool, so that will be fun.
